A day after the New England Patriots vowed that they wouldn't get involved in a media war of words, New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie(notes) went the other way.
Choosing profanity and name-calling as his weapons of choice, Cromartie has escalated the pregame babble battle. Jets head coach Rex Ryan complained Tuesday about Brady's alleged habit of pointing to the opposing bench after scoring a touchdown. Cromartie expanded on the thought to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News.
"We see that a lot. He does it a lot," Cromartie said. "That's the kind of guy he is. We really don't give a damn, to tell you the truth."
Okay, what kind of guy is Brady?
"An ass----.
"---- him."
My goodness. Are you done, Antonio? No? You've got more? Continue, then.
"That's what I think about him. I don't really give a damn about him," he said. "I don't have to play against him. I play against the receivers."
Well, Brady is the one throwing to those receivers. "Yeah, but if I beat the s--- out of his receivers, he can't throw the ball," Cromartie said.
I see three problems here for Cromartie.
First, he does have to play against Brady. Those receivers he's going to beat the [expletive] out of? They don't exist in a vacuum. Tom Brady(notes) throws footballs to them, and he's pretty good at doing it in a way that makes cornerbacks look bad.
Second, looking bad has been a specialty of Cromartie's recently. Pierre Garçon lit him up on Saturday. Cameras caught head coach Rex Ryan openly scolding Cromartie on the sidelines.
And third, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick aren't above a little vindictive behavior of their own. They might not talk about it beforehand, but I promise you that they've noticed Cromartie's comments and will respond in their own way. Cromartie just earned himself a little extra time being studied in the Patriots' film room.
For a guy who gets beaten pretty regularly, that may not have been the best idea.
