Holmgren building home near 49ers

The fact that Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and his wife Kathy are building a home in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the San Francisco 49ers training facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is sure to fuel the strong speculation that he could return to the team where he got his start in professional coaching under Bill Walsh.

Holmgren, who is in the last year of his contract and has announced he is leaving the Seahawks after this season, says that he plans to take a year off. After that, however, he has no plans and only chuckled lightly when the rumors about his return to the 49ers came up.

"That really is speculation, isn't it?" Holmgren said.

Though league tampering rules prevent the 49ers from making contact with Holmgren since he's under contract, there has been talk in league circles of a possible reunion – either as head coach or president. An unnamed executive from another team said San Francisco's push for a new stadium could be enhanced by bringing back Holmgren, a San Francisco native and member of the team's 1981, '88 and '89 championship teams.

Holmgren said his home will be in Scott's Valley, a small community at the top of the Santa Cruz Mountains and roughly 30 minutes from where the 49ers train. Holmgren plans to maintain his home in Seattle, where his children and grandchildren live, and he also has a place in Phoenix.

But …

"I'm not sure anybody needs all these homes," he said. "I'm going to take a year off and see where I am. It (the year off) will be the big adventure. I will admit to the fact that I don't know what I'm going to feel about it. I'm absolutely at peace with the decision I made, (but) I can't tell you how I'm going to feel about this at the end of the year. I'm so used to doing this, I'm going to see how I react to not having an office to go to and not having a schedule and deadlines and all that kind of stuff.

"I think for the guys I know in this business, to go cold turkey and walk away, I don't know many guys who that's easy for them to do."

The speculation has also been brought on by the struggles of current 49ers coach Mike Nolan, 16-32 in his three seasons on the job.

I'm a 49er fan and the head coach isn't necessarily the problem, it's ownership who doesn't have a clue! What do the Yorks know about running a successful NFL franchise? Not a thing but they do know how to bring a franchise down. They have done little to nothing to build a title contender. They can't stick with an offensive coordinator for more than a year, they have no WR's for the future, Davis and Gore are good players but they have major problems remaining healthy and what about the pass rush? Justin Smith is a decent DE but he's not a 10 sack guy, the secondary is average and other than Willis at LB, what do they have? It's too bad they can't fire the owner(s) because the Yorks don't deserve to run this storied franchise.

He should stay in Seattle and we should send Jim Mora Jr. back to San Francisco.

Well the Hawks, I don't believe will be better without him, but if Mora truly can coach a team that already has a good nucleus of players that they keep adding to, than Mora will be o.k. in Seattle.

Doesn't he already have a home in Monterey? Scott's Valley is barely 1/2 hour from there. Interesting. If he wanted to open a coffee shop, Monterey seems like a good place. Plus, it's not like he needs to be "close to town" or anything. The man could afford to have groceries or anything else delivered for the rest of his life.

I am not a 49'ers fan, but I remember when the Cowboys and 49'ers were the best rivalry in the NFL. Those were the days. Bringing back Mike Holmgren as President or Head Coach would be a throwback to those day and give the once proud 49'ers fan something to cheer about.
Angell Express you are correct, the real trouble in 49'ers land is the Yorks. They have chaulk up a big fat ZERO since they took over the team.

being one of the 49er faithful for all my life, i'll say the problem is definitely with the ownership!! when we had the debartolo's, players were willing to take pay cuts to come play for us because they knew how to run an organization. the coach can only coach with what he has. the players go out & half do their job, whine & cry about playing time & play calling, and it's the coach that gets put on the hot seat. it's hard to tell a mega millionaire what to do if you make less than them but nolan is not the blame for the demise of my beloved NINERS.

As an ancient 49er fan, I used to say that the 49ers would never be winners until they got rid of the Morabito family. Well, that's exactly what happened when Eddie D finally came along. Now we're back to the same old scenario. Sell the team to Brent Jones, Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Harris Barton, and have Mike Holmgren run the show. What could be better?

Mike holmgren is a good coach but he is a control freak and the payers have to bow down to his way or the highway. He would never take a chance on a player like randy moss who the hawks could have used because he cannot stand anyone being above him. Add a player like moss and win the Super Bowl or stay mikes way and lose in the early rounds of the playoffs in a weak division. Mike, have fun in SF but if you drop a dollar i suggest you do not bend over to pick it up !!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Holmgren is a family guy like Cowhers. I think he'll take the year and realize he's healthy not stressed out all the time, I think he'll go to T.V.. It seems like that's the big difference between guys like Parcells and Holmgren, Parcells doesn't have anything other than football. Holmgren seems like he is just really tired, and T.V. is easy money, NBC could use him on Sunday Nights - they really suck during halftime and pre-game.

Holmgren is the best thing that has happened to the hawks. All the haters in Washington are upset that the hawks haven't won a super bowl, before Holmgren they were mad that we couldn't get above .500. Mike is going to leave our team in a healthy state and Seattle a crazy football town. Thanks Mike and good luck whereever you go. P.S. please don't go to S.F.
