The fact that Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren and his wife Kathy are building a home in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the San Francisco 49ers training facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is sure to fuel the strong speculation that he could return to the team where he got his start in professional coaching under Bill Walsh.
Holmgren, who is in the last year of his contract and has announced he is leaving the Seahawks after this season, says that he plans to take a year off. After that, however, he has no plans and only chuckled lightly when the rumors about his return to the 49ers came up.

"That really is speculation, isn't it?" Holmgren said.
Though league tampering rules prevent the 49ers from making contact with Holmgren since he's under contract, there has been talk in league circles of a possible reunion – either as head coach or president. An unnamed executive from another team said San Francisco's push for a new stadium could be enhanced by bringing back Holmgren, a San Francisco native and member of the team's 1981, '88 and '89 championship teams.
Holmgren said his home will be in Scott's Valley, a small community at the top of the Santa Cruz Mountains and roughly 30 minutes from where the 49ers train. Holmgren plans to maintain his home in Seattle, where his children and grandchildren live, and he also has a place in Phoenix.
But …
"I'm not sure anybody needs all these homes," he said. "I'm going to take a year off and see where I am. It (the year off) will be the big adventure. I will admit to the fact that I don't know what I'm going to feel about it. I'm absolutely at peace with the decision I made, (but) I can't tell you how I'm going to feel about this at the end of the year. I'm so used to doing this, I'm going to see how I react to not having an office to go to and not having a schedule and deadlines and all that kind of stuff.
"I think for the guys I know in this business, to go cold turkey and walk away, I don't know many guys who that's easy for them to do."
The speculation has also been brought on by the struggles of current 49ers coach Mike Nolan, 16-32 in his three seasons on the job.
