White Sox 5-1, Phillies 4-2
PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Young singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning on Saturday night as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 to gain a split of a double-header that saw both games go extra innings.
The White Sox won the first game 5-4 when Alexei Ramirez, who had four hits, doubled home Alejandro De Aza with the go-ahead run with two outs in the 11th.
Humberto Quintero drew a walk from Simon Castro (0-1) leading off the 13th inning in the nightcap. Jimmy Rollins grounded into a forceout, and winning pitcher Joe Savery (2-0) sacrificed him to second.
Young then lined a 1-1 pitch into right field and Rollins beat the throw from right fielder Casper Wells to catcher Tyler Flowers with a headfirst slide.
The Phillies are now 6-3 on their homestand with one game remaining before the All-Star break.
Phillies left fielder Domonic Brown threw out Jeff Keppinger at the plate to end the top of the 11th when he attempted to score from second on Flowers' single.
Both starters pitched well. Philadelphia's John Lannan went eight innings and allowed one run and four hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Chicago's Hector Santiago worked 7 1/3 innings and allowed one run and three hits while striking out nine and walking one. The only run the Phillies managed against him came on John Mayberry Jr.'s homer in the seventh, which forged a 1-1 tie.
The White Sox took a 1-0 lead on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by Gordon Beckham.
In the first game, De Aza tripled off J.C. Ramirez (0-1) with two down in the 11th. Ramirez, who went 4-for-6, then doubled into the right center field gap to put Chicago ahead.
Ramirez scored on an error by Rollins at short, making it 5-3.
White Sox closer Addison Reed allowed an RBI single to Humberto Quintero in the bottom of the 11th but picked up his 24th save.
The Phillies' Darin Ruf had tied the score with a solo homer off Chicago starter John Danks in the seventh.
NOTES: Phillies CF Ben Revere broke his right foot when he fouled a ball off it in the 11th inning of the first game and will be placed on the disabled list. Revere, who will be evaluated by a specialist on Monday, had hit .347 since May 1, raising his average to .305. ... The White Sox recalled LHP Donnie Veal from Triple-A Charlotte earlier in the day to fill the roster spot vacated when LHP Matt Thornton was traded to Boston on Friday. Veal came on in relief in the eighth inning of the first game and retired Brown on a fly to left. ... The first game was delayed 41 minutes by rain in the middle of the ninth inning.
