Joshua Ho-Sang is a bit of a lightning rod. He’s outspoken, some might say. He’s a non-conformer. Above all, he’s interesting and that’s not often a descriptor used for often stereotypical ho-hum hockey players. That’s what makes Ho-Sang rather exciting.
The Islanders’ second first-round pick of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft at 28th overall, Ho-Sang was already getting attention for comments he made criticizing Hockey Canada for not inviting him to their World Junior camp earlier in August. But today, he’s getting attention for something a little less controversial.
While participating at the BioSteel camp with a multitude of NHL players and prospects, Ho-Sang participated in a skills competition-style shootout. We shared one of the goals from the camp yesterday – Jordan Subban’s unique goal on brother Malcolm – but Ho-Sang’s may take the cake.
Skating in on Malcolm Subban, Ho-Sang took the slow approach when all of the sudden he dipped his stick, whipped around and while cradling the puck on the blade of his stick in mid-air, he threw it on net lacrosse style. Subban didn’t stand a chance.
It gets better with every replay. Bonus points for continuing the spin on his knees on the follow through.
The judges were clearly impressed. Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin gave Ho-Sang a 12 out of 10, so that’s pretty good. The other judges gave plain old 10s.
Ho-Sang has some dazzling skill and while he’s definitely a showman, he’s also effective. The 18-year-old Toronto native put up 85 points in 67 games for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL last year. He could be a fun prospect as he progresses through the ranks.
