UFL suspends season, vows to return in spring
The United Football League suspended its season, NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk reported Saturday.
The UFL, which cut its season short last season as well, has had significant financial problems since debuting four years ago.
Agent David Canter, who has clients on UFL teams, said the league informed its players that the season has been suspended, but still hopes to return in the spring.
Sacramento Mountain Lions owner Paul Pelosi recently admitted that players have not been fully paid but promised they will be soon, according to CBS Sports, which was broadcasting the games.
Former Mountain Lions coach and general manager Dennis Green recently filed a lawsuit against the league, alleging it has not paid him for his three seasons of service.
Former Virginia Destroyers coach Marty Schottenheimer is also suing the league for failing to pay him.
The season started in September and was scheduled to run through November.
The league began the season dwindled down to just four teams.
Attendance at season openers in September was sparse. Las Vegas only attracted a crowd of 2,500 to watch the host Locomotives defeat the Destroyers 19-6 in a rematch of last year's championship game.
