Texas AD says he's 'never considered' changing coaches a la LSU

Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said he hasn’t given thought to replacing football coach Charlie Strong in midseason.

Reports emerged earlier in the week following Texas’ loss to Oklahoma State that Strong was “expected” to be fired at the end of the season. Texas is currently 13-16 with Strong, who was hired before the 2014 season to replace Mack Brown.

Perrin made his remarks Friday while speaking to reporters in Austin. From the Austin American-Statesman:

Asked if he would consider changing coaches like LSU did in September, Perrin said, “That’s something I’ve never considered.”

Perrin replaced Steve Patterson in September 2015 while Strong was entering his second season as head coach. Perrin said he hasn’t “given up” on the team and noted that there were still two months left in the season. Strong said this week that he would be taking over the defense and defensive coordinator Vance Bedford was now the team’s defensive backs coach.

Perrin also repeated a phrase he uttered earlier this spring.

In March, Perrin said Strong was a “great coach” and a “great man” and he had no magic number of wins in 2016 for Strong to retain his job.

If Texas was to decide to move on from Strong, it would owe him a $10 million buyout. And his replacement (like Houston’s Tom Herman or someone else) wouldn’t come cheap either.

Texas plays Oklahoma on Saturday. Strong’s team won 24-17 in 2015. A second win vs. OU would not only quiet the discord among Texas faithful but also likely ruin any remaining hope the Sooners have of making the College Football Playoff. A loss? Well, given what happened after the Oklahoma State game, who the heck knows.
