SMU quarterback Matt Davis is out for the season.

Mustangs coach Chad Morris revealed Monday that Davis suffered a torn ACL in the season opener against North Texas. Davis, a senior, will apply for an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA, Morris said.

“He’s hurt and disappointed,” Morris said per the Dallas Morning News. “Matt has meant so much to our program. He’s a great senior, a phenomenal leader.”

Davis threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 94 yards and another score in a win 34-21 over North Texas on Sept. 3, but missed the Mustangs’ 40-13 loss to Baylor over the weekend.

Davis was the team’s leader in passing and rushing yards the past two seasons. His best season was 2015, Morris’ first with the program, when he threw for 2,263 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had 761 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He signed with Texas A&M out of high school and had a stop at Tyler Junior College before landing at SMU in 2014.

With Davis out, redshirt freshman Ben Hicks started in his place against Baylor and threw for 229 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Morris said Hicks, a three-star recruit in the 2015 class, will start moving forward.
