The tussle happened at the 15:24 mark of the second period at Staples Center after what had been a physical contest up to that point. The two all-stars squared off in a bout that wasn’t all that long, but memorable after Kesler nailed Carter with the big hooking punch.

Carter then dropped to the ice, but then tried to continue briefly before the linesman broke up the bout. He returned to game action after serving his fighting major and scored a goal and added an assist in the Kings’ 4-1 in.

“He’s trying to get his team going, Carts is trying to get us going a little bit,” Kings captain Anze Kopitar said. “I think it’s one of those things that kind of happens and that’s about it.”

Earlier in the game, the Kings put some big hits on the Ducks, which led to Ducks forward Nate Thompson going after Kings defenseman Brayden McNabb. The physical blue liner had previous hit Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, which hobbled Getzlaf as he went to the bench.
