It took four months, but it’s finally official: Maryland and Rutgers will play at Yankee Stadium in 2017.

Both programs announced the news, which was reported by multiple outlets back in May, on Tuesday morning. The game, a home game for Rutgers (originally scheduled for High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway), will take place on Nov. 4, 2017 and will be coupled with a wrestling match. The event has been dubbed the “Big Ten Battle in the Bronx,” because nothing screams “Big Ten country” more than New York City, am I right? All joking aside, this event should be pretty cool; both schools are certainly excited about it.

“Never before has a doubleheader such as this taken place at a venue so iconic,” said Rutgers athletic director Patrick Hobbs. “We are thrilled to provide our fans this one-of-a-kind experience while enhancing the Big Ten brand in the world’s media capital. This is certain to be a very special day. We are thankful to the New York Yankees, the Big Ten Conference and the University of Maryland for helping to make it possible.”

Added Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson: “We are thrilled to participate in such a prestigious event at one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues. I am excited that our fans will have the opportunity to view both our football and wrestling programs on such a unique platform. We look forward to working with the New York Yankees, the Big Ten Conference and Rutgers University to make this a memorable event for all.”

Rutgers has played three recent games at the new Yankee Stadium, a regular season game vs. Army in 2011 and twice in the Pinstripe Bowl in 2011 (vs. Iowa State) and 2013 (vs. Notre Dame). The Scarlet Knights are 2-1 in those games, with the lone loss coming to the Fighting Irish. Overall, the program has played 12 games at Yankee Stadium dating back to 1926.

Since both programs joined the Big Ten in 2014, they have split their two conference games with Rutgers winning in 2014 and Maryland winning in 2015.

We can only hope a trophy will be added to this historic rivalry.
