Rex Ryan tips scales at 242 -- less than Tebow

You'll be seeing a lot less of Rex Ryan this season.

The Jets' coach hasn't been one to shy away from blabbering for the microphone, but he's down in the blubber department.

Ryan, like his brother and Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, underwent lap-band surgery two years ago. He said Thursday he's ready to enter a new weight class, having dropped a total of 106 pounds down to 242 entering training camp.

He weighs about 10 pounds less than backup quarterback Tim Tebow.

"I think we look similar -- except he's left-handed and I'm right-handed," Ryan said.

Ryan's waistline is now 38 inches -- it was 48 in 2010 -- while his appetite for competition is higher than ever. Ryan said he's meeting this season with greater anticipation and expectations than ever before.

That's saying something, considering he guaranteed the Jets would make the Super Bowl in 2010. And again in 2011.

Rob Ryan has lost 60 pounds, but Rex Ryan is the one who chose to become a paid spokesman for the surgery after recently hitting the 100 pounds lost mark.

"I make a lot of money doing something I love," he said. "I'm only one of 32 guys that has this position -- head coach in the National Football League. But without your health, what do you really have?"
