Report: Rodriguez willing to leave Yankees
Alex Rodriguez's days appeared to be numbered in New York after his benching during the playoffs, and the Yankees third baseman says he's open to going elsewhere.
Rodriguez won't lobby for a trade, a source told USA Today, but both sides are looking for a way out. He has five years and $114 million remaining on his contract.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman rejected a report that a deal was discussed with the Miami Marlins.
"I've had no discussions whatsoever with the Florida Marlins," Cashman said. "I can tell you there are no discussions whatsoever, 100 percent false. We are not down the line on any trade talks on any of our players, including Alex."
USA Today's report indicated that Rodriguez would only agree to go to a big-market team. He has a full no-trade clause in his contract.
Among the suitors could be the Marlins, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox, according to USA Today.
However, CBS Sports reported that the Marlins and Dodgers denied interest.
A Marlins source told CBS Sports' Jon Heyman about a possible deal for Rodriguez, "BS. Not happening."
Heyman also quoted an unnamed Dodgers source as saying, "No," when asked if the team would want to acquire Rodriguez.
Rodriguez never got off the bench in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Tigers, and he went 0-for-2 as a sub during Game 4 as the Tigers finished their sweep of the Yankees.
In seven postseason games this year, Rodriguez went 3-for-25 (.120) with no extra-base hits, no RBI and 12 strikeouts.
Aside from a stellar performance in the Yankees' run to the 2009 World Series championship, Rodriguez has been a colossal postseason flop for New York. Excluding 2009, he has hit .207 (35-for-169) with four homers and 15 RBI 45 postseason games as a Yankee. During his lone big playoff year, Rodriguez batted .365 with six homers and 18 RBI in 15 games.
