Report: Rams sign Jake Long

Offensive tackle Jake Long, the first player selected in the 2008, is apparently getting closer to a deal with the St. Louis Rams.

After being examined by the Rams medical staff, Long reportedly satisfied the team that he's healthy enough to sign. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that the Rams were "OK with him medically" and that the two sides were "hammering out a deal."

Long had reportedly been seeking $11 million a year as a reward for being a three-time Pro Bowler at left tackle for the Miami Dolphins, but he has had injury problems with his back, shoulder, biceps, triceps and knees. Therefore, Long has undergone what is described as the most thorough physical exam in team history, despite the fact that Dr. James Andrews gave Long a "glowing review."

The Rams are hoping that a healthy Long can step in at left tackle, which would allow Roger Saffold to move to right tackle instead of maintaining his request for a trade.
