Report: Iowa State investigation finds ‘major infractions’
An Iowa State University-led investigation discovered three years' worth of impermissible phone calls and text messages that constitute major violations, according to the Ames Tribune.
The school submitted their findings in a disposition to the NCAA, and the newspaper obtained a copy through the Iowa open records law.
The university found that six current and former members of the ISU football and men's basketball coaching staffs could face potential NCAA penalties.
Current football assistant coaches Shane Burnham and Bill Bleil are included in the report, as well as former football assistants Bobby Elliott and Luke Wells.
On the basketball side, former men's basketball staff members Daniyal Robinson and Keith "Lefty" Moore were included.
All are at risk of an NCAA show-cause penalty. All could face some kind of NCAA show-cause penalty. According to the paper, the violations spring from coaches not properly recording phone calls when they didn't reach recruits or simply left a message.
"The athletics department failed to adequately monitor its sports programs and educate its coaches regarding telephone communication with prospective student-athletes," the paper said, citing the report.
In total, 33 coaches in all 18 varsity sports at ISU were found "at-risk for 1,405 impermissible calls." Also, 165 impermissible text messages were found to have been sent, with 160 attributed to Moore.
ISU spokesman Tom Kroeschell told the Ames Tribune that the athletic department wouldn't have any further. Moore declined comment when reached by the paper Wednesday night.
