Redskins' Garcon doubtful; Meriweather questionable

Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon is listed as doubtful to play against the Bengals on Sunday with a foot injury.

He went through drill work on Friday, but remains sore and did not take any reps with the offense.

"Unless he can go before the game, we'll miss him there," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "It's either he can do it or he can't. He played pretty hard today but it's just a little too sore. He got some good work in early but until he's good enough to go, we still have a question mark."

If Garcon is out, the Redskins will turn to a rotation of Leonard Hankerson, Santana Moss, Josh Morgan and Aldrick Robinson.

Safety Brandon Meriweather (knee) is questionable as he attempts to make his season debut, while cornerback Josh Wilson is listed as probable as he recovers from a concussion.

Shanahan wasn't about to announce whether Meriweather will play or not.

"You have to show up and watch the game... That's our game plan right there. You can't give it away," Shanahan said.

Sunday will mark the Redskins' regular-season home opener. It could also mark the first career start for linebacker Chris Wilson, who has been competing with fellow veteran Rob Jackson to replace injured Brian Orakpo.

Wilson, who entered the league as an undrafted rookie signed by the Redskins in 2007, was out of the league last year.

"I'm going to be able to tell you a lot more here in the remainder of the season if he takes advantage of that opportunity. That's all you can do - is look to have that opportunity and take advantage once you get it," Shanahan said. "Chris is going to have a chance to show us what he can do with Orakpo going down. Not only playing on defense, but in the nickel and on special teams. You're going to get a chance to show us if he takes advantage of his opportunity."

Wilson was cut by the Eagles, and Shanahan said he invited Wilson back after running into him at the team's facility one day.

"He was in the building the next day. We signed him to a contract. Sometimes, it's as simple as that," Shanahan said. Guys look for that opportunity. You never know. Once you miss a year, it's hard to get back into this league. You have to stay in shape. You've really got to be disciplined. You really have to want it. Chris did all of the above."
