Reds place reliever Broxton on DL

Cincinnati Reds right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a flexor mass strain in his right forearm, which will require surgery.

The Reds also transferred right-handed ace Johnny Cueto to the 60-day disabled list. Cueto has been on the disabled list with a strained muscle behind his right shoulder. He last pitched on June 28.

A roster spot opened for right-hander Nick Christiani, who was called up from Class AAA Louisville.

Broxton left Wednesday's 10-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks after facing two batters in the eighth inning. He had appeared in five games since coming off the DL on Aug. 7 with a strained right elbow. He was on the DL for nearly two months.

Christiani is 6-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 47 appearances with Louisville this season.

Broxton is likely out for the year but the exact timeline for his recovery is not clear. Broxton is 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA over 30 2/3 innings this season.
