RB Dyer dismissed from Arkansas State program

Running back Michael Dyer, who transferred to Arkansas State after being suspended at Auburn, has been dismissed from the Arkansas State program before ever playing a game.

Coach Gus Malzahn made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday.

"I am truly disappointed that it didn't work out here at ASU for Mike,"Malzahn said. "I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future."

The Jonesboro Sun reported the dismissal was probably related to a March traffic stop in which Dyer was pulled over by an Arkansas State Trooper who found marijuana and a gun in his vehicle.

Dyer was given a speeding ticket for $175, but no charges were filed for the discovery of the handgun or drugs. The officer is now under investigation for his handling of the situation.

Dyer rushed for 1,242 yards for Auburn last season, and he was named the offensive MVP of the national championship game following the 2010 season when he was a freshman.

But he testified in April during an armed robbery trial that his gun was used in the crime. He also admitted to smoking marijuana and synthetic marijuana.

He was suspended indefinitely by Auburn.

Malzahn, Dyer's offensive coordinator at Auburn, was willing to give Dyer, who went to high school in Little Rock, another chance after Malzahn was hired as Arkansas State's head coach.

Less than two weeks ago, Dyer and Malzahn held a joint press conference to talk about Dyer's intention to stay at ASU beyond 2012. Dyer would have been eligible for the NFL Draft at the end of the season even though he is ineligible to play for the Red Wolves this season as a transfer.
