Rangers put Tepesch, Berkman on DL, activate Soria

The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Nick Tepesch and designated hitter Lance Berkman on the disabled list and activated reliever Joakim Soria on Sunday.

Tepesch, 24, was the winning pitcher in Friday's 10-5 victory over the Houston Astros but experienced soreness in his inflamed right elbow on Saturday. He is 4-6 with a 4.89 ERA in 16 starts this year.

Berkman, 37, suffered an injured muscle in his hip and back during Saturday night's 9-5 loss to the Astros and left the game in the seventh inning. He is batting .254 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 68 games this season.

Soria, a right-hander, was on the 60-day disabled list and has not pitched in the major leagues since Sept. 11, 2011, with Kansas City. The 29-year-old, who is coming off his second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, pitched in seven rehab games and gave up only one hit.

In five years with the Royals, Soria compiled 160 saves and a 2.40 ERA.

In another roster move, the Rangers called up right-hander Cory Burns from Triple-A Round Rock.
