PREMIER LEAGUE: 'Fat boys' Toure and Bony need to lose weight according to BMI readings

If NHS guidelines are applied to Premier League footballers, more than 25 players would be classified overweight while some would even be considered below a healthy weight

Manchester City's Wilfried Bony and Yaya Toure, and Manchester United's Memphis Depay are "overweight" and could do with losing a few pounds - as far as the NHS is concerned.

Guidelines say that adults can use body mass index (BMI) to see whether their weight is healthy when compared to their height, reading: "if your BMI is 25 or more, you should think about losing weight."

However, BMI doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle, which makes it irrelevant for most athletes.

As many as 26 Premier League stars could do with losing weight if the guidelines are to be believed, accoding to a report in the Manchester Evening News.

Top of the Weight Watchers hit-list is Norwich's Martin Olsson.

The Swedish defender has the highest BMI (28) of Premier League players to have made at least one league appearance this season.

NHS guidelines also suggest that people with a score of under 18.5 need to: "talk to their GP about gaining weight."

Tottenham's Eric Dier and Norwich's Kyle Lafferty fit this bill, though Peter Crouch is also very close to the threshold.
