Points per Game rankings

Galin Dragiev ranks the Yahoo! Premier League players by Points per Game

Since many players were absent for periods of time, whether it be for injuries or managerial decisions, I’ve ranked the players based on their points per game. This gives us a good idea on how good a certain player is if they were to be healthy for the entire season. In order to get an even better idea of how valuable they are, we need to consider their price. I will post a new column towards the beginning of next season that includes the new players prices.

Below are the top 10 players for each position ranked by Points per Game.

Forwards

L. Suarez (F - LIV)

17.73

W. Rooney (F - MAN)

12.76

S. Agüero (F - MAC)

12.61

D. Sturridge (F - LIV)

12.24

E. Hazard (F - CHE)

9.91

R. Snodgrass (F - NOR)

9.03

O. Giroud (F - ARS)

9.00

J. Rodriguez (F - SHN)

8.82

L. Remy (F - NEW)

8.77

E. Adebayor (F - TOT)

8.67

Nothing too exciting here. Luis Suarez was obviously was best forward to own, with Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero, and Daniel Sturridge in a level below. After those three, there is again a big jump. I would target as many of the top four as possible next year. The difference between them and anyone else is huge.

Midfielders

S. Gerrard (M - LIV)

11.88

A. Ramsey (M - ARS)

11.83

T. Walcott (M - ARS)

10.23

Yaya Touré (M - MAC)

9.34

C. Eriksen (M - TOT)

9.24

A. Lallana (M - SHN)

8.89

S. Cazorla (M - ARS)

8.55

P. Coutinho (M - LIV)

8.09

Joe Ledley (M - CRY)

8.07

M. Özil (M - ARS)

7.88

The results here were a little more interesting. First of all, it’s important to note how good Steven Gerrard and Aaron Ramsey were. They ranked in 7th and 6th place, respectively, in percentage owned, but were clearly the two best midfielders to have in terms of raw production. Something else to note is that Joe Ledley was ninth in points per game. He was owned by less than 1% of managers and can act as a great differential if he can get on the pitch again next season.

Defenders

L. Baines (D - EVE)

10.25

J. Ward (D - CRY)

9.03

L. Koscielny (D - ARS)

8.66

M. Debuchy (D - NEW)

8.52

C. Davies (D - HUL)

8.41

A. Kolarov (D - MAC)

8.38

S. Caulker (D - CAR)

7.92

K. Walker (D - TOT)

7.85

P. Zabaleta (D - MAC)

7.66

S. Dann (D - CRY)

7.64

Defenders were also fairly straightforward, but some big names are missing. It’s very surprising to see that no Chelsea defenders are present, despite their impressive number of clean sheets this season. A differential for next year from this group can be Scott Dann, who is owned by less than 1% of managers and is fairly priced.

Goalkeepers

P. Cech (G - CHE)

8.21

V. Mannone (G - SUN)

8.00

W. Szczesny (G - ARS)

7.70

T. Howard (G - EVE)

7.68

J. Hart (G - MAC)

6.90

A. Boruc (G - SHN)

6.86

Adrián (G - WHU)

6.75

A. Begovic (G - STO)

6.63

S. Mignolet (G - LIV)

6.26

H. Lloris (G - TOT)

5.92

The main piece of information to note from here is that the list is dominated by teams with great defensive performances and teams that win. The points earned from winning and from clean sheets seem to dominate the points earned from saves. Vito Mannone is an absolutely fantastic goalkeeper who can be good regardless of his team’s success, but outside of him, you should target the goalkeepers from the best teams next season.
