Phillies pound out 16-1 win over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES -- The Philadelphia Phillies didn't waste any time ending the Los Angeles Dodgers' six-game winning streak.
Delmon Young drove in a career-high six runs, and Michael Young and Chase Utley scored three runs apiece in the Phillies' 16-1 drubbing of the Dodgers on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
The margin of defeat was the largest since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles and the biggest in club history at home since July 3, 1947, against the New York Giants when they lost by 17.
"It was a good game from top to bottom," Delmon Young said. "We had a good first inning, we kept putting together good at-bats and (starting pitcher John) Lannan kept putting up zeros.
"I know it had to be the highest offensive total we've had all year. It wasn't like those other games where we had a lot of hits and didn't score many runs. Tonight. we actually drove everyone in."
Dodgers starter Chris Capuano, who had pitched 11 scoreless innings since coming off of the disabled list on June 11, was tagged for three runs in the first and second innings.
"It's frustrating because when you give up some runs early as a pitcher, your only saving grace is to try to hold them right there and go as deep as you can and try to save your bullpen," Capuano said. "The problem was that I wasn't locating (pitches) enough to get ahead. I was falling into a lot of hitters' counts. When you do that, you have to come into the zone and you get bad results. I have to do a better job of hitting the zone of attacking the zone early and getting good counts.
"It was a tough night all around and I hate to be the one to stop the momentum.
Delmon Young drove in one run in the first inning and had a two-run double in the second. Michael Young also homered off Capuano, who lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits.
Peter Moylan and Matt Guerrier didn't fare much better in relief of Capuano. They combined to give up eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
"It was a tough game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "It was one of those games where they just kept going. We could have gotten some zeroes in there but we didn't.
"At the end of the day, they're no fun to be a part of. You feel bad for the guys coming out of the bullpen."
Domonic Brown give the Phillies a 9-0 lead in the sixth when his single to right field allowed Michael Young to beat a throw to the plate by Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig.
Delmon Young added his fourth RBI with a grounder and John Mayberry followed with a two-run homer to give the Phillies a 12-0 advantage.
The Phillies scored in seven of the first eight innings, capped by a four-run seventh. The big hit in that inning was a two-run single by Delmon Young.
"It was one of those odd games that doesn't happen very often," Michael Young said. "We've been talking about trying to generate some momentum offensively as a team and producing the way we're all capable of doing. I mean, you never expect something like this, but we expect to go out and have good at-bats and play solid fundamental baseball."
Things got so bad for the Dodgers that Mattingly turned to Skip Schumaker for an inning on the mound. Schumaker loaded the bases in the ninth but struck out Humberto Quintero to escape the jam.
"Donnie told me early on in the game that it was a possibility, so I was loose to go," Schumaker said. "You don't want to make a mockery of this game and get anybody hurt. I threw up and in on Mayberry and I felt horrible about it. I was just trying to get out of the inning as quickly as I could."
NOTES: The Dodgers activated OF Scott Van Slyke from the 15-day disabled list. Van Slyke had been on the DL since June 11 with bursitis in his left shoulder. ... INF Luis Cruz was designated for assignment by the Dodgers. Cruz, who batted .297 in 78 games with the Dodgers in 2012, was batting .127 this season. ... RHP Carlos Zambrano injured his arm in what was expected to be his final minor-league start for the Phillies' Triple-A team in Lehigh Valley. He signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies, but it had an opt-out date of July 1. ... INF John McDonald, who was acquired by the Phillies from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, arrived at Dodger Stadium but was not in his new team's starting lineup.
