Phillies 4, Nationals 2
PHILADELPHIA -- Cliff Lee earned his seventh straight victory and Michael Young went 3-for-4 with three doubles and the go-ahead RBI Tuesday night as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 4-2.
Lee (9-2), who had a career-best 11-game winning streak with Cleveland in 2008, also won seven straight with the Phils in 2011. He worked eight innings and allowed two runs, on solo homers by Jayson Werth in the fourth and rookie Jeff Kobernus in the eighth, and five hits.
Lee struck out nine and did not walk a batter, as Philadelphia beat Washington for the second straight day.
The Nationals have lost four of five in all.
Jonathan Papelbon, who on Monday blew his first save of the season, worked a scoreless ninth inning to run his saves total to 14.
The Phillies broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three times in the sixth. Ben Revere led off against Ross Detwiler (2-5) with a bunt single, extending his hitting streak to nine games. The right-handed-hitting Young then lined an opposite-field double into the right-field corner on Detwiler's 3-2 delivery. Revere, who was running on the pitch, came all the way around to score.
Jimmy Rollins followed with a single and Ryan Howard was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Domonic Brown and Delmon Young struck out, but Kevin Frandsen singled home two runs, making it 4-1.
Detwiler surrendered a season-high four runs on seven hits. He struck out four and hit two batters.
Kobernus' homer, which came as a pinch hitter, was the first of his major-league career. Werth hit his seventh for Washington.
Werth, a former Phillie, hit a two-out solo homer off Lee in the fourth, but the Phillies tied it on Howard's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
Lee made a bid to put the Phillies ahead when he singled in the fifth with two outs and Delmon Young at second, but Nats center fielder Denard Span gunned Young down at the plate.
NOTES: The start of the game was delayed 70 minutes by rain. ... Earlier in the day, the Phillies activated C Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list and sent C Steven Lerud to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ruiz, who started Tuesday, had not played since May 19 because of a hamstring pull. ... Washington 1B Adam LaRoche ended a 0-for-16 slump with a fourth-inning single off Lee.
