Panthers' Weiss to have wrist surgery

The SportsXchange

Center Stephen Weiss' trying season with the Florida Panthers ended Tuesday with a wrist injury.

General manager Dale Tallon announced Tuesday that Weiss will have surgery early next week and would miss about three months.

A first-round draft pick in 2001, Weiss has endured a difficult season that included the death of his grandmother. He scored just one goal in 17 games.

"He couldn't perform up to his capabilities, in his opinion, and he wanted to get it fixed," Tallon told NHL.com. "It was difficult for him and for all of us. Stephen cares and he feels badly about it, but he's got to do what's best for him, too. This is a big year for him as well."

The Panthers' longest-tenured member, Weiss is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

"We'll go into that later," Tallon said. "Let's get him healthy first."
