Packers bring back running back Christine Michael

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed running back Christine Michael. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates.

Michael was brought to the team back in November after stints in Seattle, Dallas, and Washington. It was a position of need for the Packers after injuries to both Eddie Lacy and James Starks.

Michael was selected just one pick after Lacy in the 2013 draft by Seattle. Coming out of Texas A&M some draft experts believed he had the most potential out of the group.

Playing in eight games for the team, never really getting hot averaging just under four yards a carry.

For much of Michael’s time in Green Bay he served as the backup running back to Ty Montgomery. Montgomery had changed positions from wide receiver to running back.

This move comes in the aftermath of Eddie Lacy leaving the team to join Seattle on a one-year contract. Lacy’s deal includes several bonuses based on weight restrictions.

The running back position for the Packers remains one of the team’s biggest question marks heading into next year.

Montgomery may end up being the leading back once again; however, is it smart to rely so heavily on the former wide receiver remains to be seen.

If the team elects to draft a running back they may have a few options. Assuming LSU’s Leonard Fournette is long gone by the 29th pick, Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey may be the best option.

Other top running back prospects in this year’s draft include Dalvin Cook, Joe Mixon, Alvin Kamara, and D’Onta Foreman.

There are, however, a few veteran backs still on the free agent market including Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles. But knowing the team’s history, do not expect them to do that.

As currently constructed Green Bay’s backfield could look very similar to the mediocre one of last year.
