Ohio State confirms player suspensions
The Ohio State athletic department acknowledged Monday that coach Urban Meyer had suspended starting tight end Jake Stoneburner and offensive tackle Jack Mewhort after an incident early Saturday morning led to their arrests.
"Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer confirmed today that student-athletes Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort have been suspended from all football team activities," the statement read. "There will be no further comment on the issue at this time."
Ohio State students are taking final exams this week.
Stoneburner responded Monday afternoon on Twitter. "Thanks for all the support from family, friends, and especially my teammates. Love you all! Unfortunate situation, but we will overcome it."
The two players allegedly urinated outside a restaurant near where the Memorial Tournament was being played north of Columbus. Stoneburner's family home is on Muirfield Village Golf Club and the players allegedly were headed there.
The two were arrested by Shawnee Hills police on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing official business. They posted bail later that morning and were released.
Arraignment is set for June 11. An official report won't be available until Tuesday, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
Attorney Mark Collins, who represents Stoneburner and Mewhort, expects the suspension to be temporary and hopes to resolve the issue with police.
