Notre Dame gets safety thanks to Nevada kick return blunder (Video)
Notre Dame increased its lead over Nevada in a rather unorthodox way.
The Irish were kicking off to the Wolf Pack after a DeShone Kizer seven-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Sanders made the score 9-0. When Nevada’s Ahki Muhammad fielded the kick a yard deep in his own end zone, he first decided to try his luck against the Notre Dame coverage unit, but then, in a split second, reconsidered and took a knee.
However, Muhammad briefly left the end zone and then retreated back past the goal line to take a knee. Despite initial confusion from the officials, Muhammad’s gaffe resulted in a safety.
It was clearly the right call, too, even though the line judge signaled a touchback at first. He quickly, and hilariously, changed his course.
That isn’t the first time we’ve seen this. Two years ago, Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead one second into its home game against Western Illinois when Kyle Hammonds made the same mistake Muhammad did.
Live and learn, I suppose.
