Norfolk State 75, Coppin State 68

Malcolm Hawkins scored 19 points and Brandon Goode elevated the Spartans to a dominant effort on the glass, as host Norfolk State defeated Coppin State, 75-68, on Saturday night.

Goode racked up 11 points and 11 rebounds as Norfolk State (10-10, 5-0) won its fourth straight game. He helped the Spartans log a 44-32 rebounding advantage.

Norfolk State led for most of the game, but didn't start widening the gap until going on a 17-5 run to open a 46-35 advantage midway through the second half. Coppin got back within single digits in the final two minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late for the Eagles (4-15, 1-3).

Norfolk State guard Pendarvis Williams scored in double digits for the seventh straight game, tallying 10 points despite an off night shooting the ball from the field, where he hit on just two of 10 attempts. The Spartans won despite making one of 19 three-pointers.

Coppin's Andre Armstrong led all scorers with 22 points. Michael Murray added 17 points and Taariq Cephas 14, while Zachary Burnham grabbed 10 rebounds.

This marked the MEAC home opener for Norfolk, which plays eight of its final 12 conference games at Echols Hall.
