NFL-National Football League roundup

Sept 10 (The Sports Xchange) - Shaun Hill is expected to be the starting quarterback over Sam Bradford for the Minnesota Vikings in Sunday's season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Vikings players were informed that Hill will get the start, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and confirmed to ESPN on Saturday. Bradford, who was acquired for a 2017 first-round pick and a conditional 2018 fourth-rounder in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles last week, joined the Vikings after Teddy Bridgewater tore multiple ligaments in his knee Aug. 30. The 36-year-old Hill may get the start for only one week as the Minnesota coaches continue to scramble to get Bradford acclimated with the offensive system. - - - The New England Patriots announced that star tight end Rob Gronkowski will miss the team's season opener in Arizona against the Cardinals on Sunday night because of a hamstring injury. Gronkowski, who did not play in any preseason games, has been a limited participant in practice since a joint training camp practice with the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15. "It boils to a coaching decision, the medical team, and myself," Gronkowski said. - - - Wide receiver Markus Wheaton of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been ruled out of Monday's season opener against the Washington Redskins. The Steelers announced Wheaton as out in Saturday's official injury report because of a shoulder injury. The 25-year-old Wheaton caught 44 passes for 749 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games last season. - - - The Detroit Lions released linebacker Josh Bynes from injured reserve. Before his knee injury, Bynes was the Lions' No. 4 linebacker and was pushing for a starting spot. Bynes played in all 16 games last year for the Lions last season, with career highs in tackles (82) and passes defended (five). He also recorded a half-sack. - - - The Los Angeles Rams officially ruled out wide receivers Pharoh Cooper and Nelson Spruce and cornerback EJ Gaines for Monday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Cooper (shoulder), Spruce (knee) and Gaines (thigh) were not expected to play and were listed on Saturday's injury report. For the 49ers, cornerback Chris Davis is listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury. He did not participate in Saturday's practice. - - - Defensive end Jared Odrick of the Jacksonville Jaguars has been cleared from the NFL concussion protocol and is expected to play in Sunday's season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Odrick sustained a jaw injury in Wednesday's practice and was put into the concussion protocol. - - - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers promoted linebacker Josh Keyes from the team's practice squad to the active roster and waived tight end Alan Cross. - - - The Green Packers added starting offensive tackle David Bakhtiari to their injury report with a back injury for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bakhtiari is listed as questionable for the game at Jacksonville, the Packers announced. (Editing by Andrew Both)
