MLB roundup: Lohse signs with Brewers
Free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Monday.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the deal is for three years and $33
Lohse, 34, was 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 33 starts last year for the St. Louis Cardinals.
He had a difficult time finding a team in the offseason because of the league's new draft pick compensation system. The Brewers have to forfeit the 17th overall pick in the June draft and the slot money attached to that pick to get Lohse.
The right-hander turned down the Cardinals' tender offer during the winter. The Cardinals will get the 28th overall draft choice as compensation.
---The Toronto Blue Jays announced third baseman Brett Lawrie will start the season on the disabled list because of a rib cage injury.
Lawrie was injured during the World Baseball Classic. He will play in minor league games so the team can backdate his injury.
Lawrie batted .273 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI in 125 games in 2012.
---The Cleveland Indians selected the contract on veteran infielder Jason Giambi from the Triple-A Columbus roster. The team immediately placed Giambi on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain. He is eligible to come off the disabled list April 9.
The Indians also announced Scott Kazmir will be their fifth starter. Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Giambi on the 40-man roster.
--- Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Wilson Betemit had to be helped off the field after he suffered a sprained right knee in Monday's game with the Boston Red Sox.
The Baltimore Post reported Betemit was diagnosed with a Grade 2/3 PCL tear, although there was no word on how long he will be sidelined.
---The St. Louis Cardinals have selected 22-year-old Shelby Miller as their fifth starter, MLB.com reporter. Miller was chosen over Joe Kelly.
---The Arizona Diamondbacks released veteran catcher Rod Barajas, who had signed a minor league deal with the team.
---The San Diego Padres have named Edinson Volquez as their Opening Day starter for the second straight year.
