MLB: Dodgers reliever Elbert on DL
The Dodgers placed left-handed reliever Scott Elbert on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left shoulder and recalled right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife to start Friday against the Giants.
Fife replaces Nathan Eovaldi in the rotation. Eovaldi was dealt to the Marlins in the Hanley Ramirez trade.
Fife, who opposes Matt Cain of the Giants, has a 1.50 ERA in only one big league start, a no-decision against Roy Halladay and the Phillies.
Elbert had discomfort in his shoulder for several weeks.
--Cubs' starting pitcher Matt Garza is unlikely to be traded after manager Dale Sveum said Friday that the right-hander wouldn't make his scheduled start Monday.
Garza's next start will come after Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline. An MRI showed fluid in his triceps. He left his start last Saturday at St. Louis with cramping in his triceps after three innings.
Sveum said Garza won't be placed on the disabled list and will likely begin a throwing program with the potential to start by the end of next week barring setbacks.
Garza is making $9.5 million this season and is arbitration eligible again in 2013. It's possible the Cubs will deal Garza in the offseason if the two sides can't work out a long-term deal.
--The Phillies purchased the contract of infielder Kevin Frandsen from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replaced third baseman Placido Polanco on the roster.
Polanco went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 23, with lower back inflammation. The Phillies announced Polanco was being shut down on Thursday and waiting to make the corresponding move until before Friday night's series opener at Atlanta.
Frandsen, 30, can play every infield position and was primarily a shortstop at Lehigh Valley. He was batting .302 in 91 games with 34 doubles and a .733 OPS in 391 at-bats.
Frandsen was suspended for 50 games while with the IronPigs in 2011 because he tested positive for Ritalin.
He previously played for the Angels and Giants and has played every position except catcher and center field in the big leagues.
--Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said instant replay will be expanded to include trapped balls and line drives down the foul lines.
Selig made the announcement during an interview on "The Mike Lupica Show" on ESPN New York radio on Friday.
"We're now going to add it on trapped balls in the outfield and as I call them bullets down the right and left field line," Selig said.
Currently, replay is only used on home runs to determine whether a ball clears the fence or is fair or foul.
Selig did not say when replay expansion would begin. He said he will continue reviewing the policy and that he was "very cautious" about making the changes. The commissioner said he was concerned about how expanding replay would affect the pace of the game.
Selig also addressed those who feel that expanding replay is ruining the purity of the game.
"There are some people who believe that by going to the last two things, maybe I've gone too far and I don't think so," Selig said.
--About an hour after the Boston Red Sox mascot's costume was reported missing, the mystery was solved.
Wally The Green Monster mascot's costume had been reported stolen but it was apparently just a misunderstanding. A Red Sox employee had taken the costume without letting the team know beforehand.
The costume was reported stolen by a team security guard at 2:24 p.m. ET on Friday, and that the suspect was seen about a mile from Fenway Park, according to ESPN Boston.
Boston police announced at 3:30 p.m. that the costume was located and that no charges would be filed.
The team then tweeted: "Never fear Red Sox Nation: Wally is safe and on his way back to Fenway Park."
