MLB approves instant replay proposal

Major League Baseball accepted a proposal that calls for major changes in instant replay, but it will not become official until owners vote on it after the season, USA Today reported Thursday.

Commissioner Bud Selig said it was "a historic day" for baseball.

MLB vice president Joe Torre, Atlanta Braves general manager John Schuerholz and advisor Tony La Russa presented the instant replay proposal to all 30 ownership groups. They will vote on it at the owners meetings in Orlando, Fla., in mid-November.

The new, all-encompassing instant replay rules include allowing managers to challenge up to three calls per game.

The league will have a central office with replay cameras and monitored by experienced umpires that crew chief can call upon for disputed plays.

The new instant replay rules would take effect in the 2014 season.
