Coming into the 2016 season, it appears that the Miami Dolphins could have one of the most inexperienced backfields in the history of the NFL. Second year pro Jay Ajayi and rookie draft pick Kenyan Drake look certain to be the top two backs entering the OTA period of the offseason for the Miami Dolphins.

Though Arian Foster and other veteran running backs have been linked with the Dolphins over the course of the offseason, don’t expect the team to make any major moves from this point forward. With that looking to be finalized, it is an almost certainty that Jay Ajayi will be taking over a starting role with the team this season.

Missing the opening part of his rookie season due to injury, Ajayi did not make his NFL debut until the middle of November. Though his stats were a moderate success considering the lack of reps he received behind Lamar Miller, Ajayi did have some successful moments with the highlight being his first career touchdown against the San Diego Chargers during week 15.

Now, with Lamar Miller gone and a rookie backup that did not start a single game in college, Ajayi is the top man in the Miami Dolphins backfield. Considering how well he played during his time at Boise State, Ajayi could develop into a solid starting running back for the Miami Dolphins.

With an offensive line as good as its been in many years and a passing game that is expected to be its best since the Dan Marino era, Ajayi has a lot going for him in the Dolphins offense. With all of the benefits that Ajayi should have this season, I will be looking for him to take over right where Lamar Miller left off in terms of yards per rush and touchdowns per attempt.

However, while I do expect Ajayi to be the starter this season, I will also be looking for Kenyan Drake to get in on the action this season as well. A change of pace back, Drake will be able to take the ball outside the tackles while Ajayi powers through the middle.

In the end though, look for Jay Ajayi to have a good year with the Miami Dolphins. While he will not be the same type of back of Lamar Miller, Ajayi has so much going right on the Dolphins offense for him that a solid rushing season looks to be definitely on the cards.
