Mariners name new coaching staff

The Seattle Mariners announced their coaching staff Monday under new manager Lloyd McClendon.

Former New York Mets two-time All-Star infielder Howard Johnson was named hitting coach and former Pittsburgh Pirates three-time All-Star outfielder Andy Van Slyke is the first-base coach.

John Stearns, who was the Mariners' Class AAA manager in Tacoma, was named third-base coach. Rick Waits is the new pitching coach, Mike Rojas is the bullpen coach and Chris Woodward is the infield coach.

The Seattle Times reported that former hitting coach Dave Hansen could return as Johnson's assistant.

Former Washington Nationals third-base coach Trent Jewett was named bench coach a few weeks ago.

McClendon was hired earlier this month after serving as the Detroit Tigers' hitting coach. He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001-05.
