Kirk Cousins wants the Redskins to be boring; Done!

During the course of this summer, something began to evolve with the Washington Redskins, and as I wrote about the team, it became hard to ignore; their boring. Like…, really kind of boring. For a fan simply hoping for, maybe even praying for wins and the relative health of the team, boring is good. Covering them and subsequently writing about them, well, boring is kind of a hard sell where clicks are involved.

That said, by admitting to being part of a team drama free, he’s bought himself no excuses should the wheels come off at some point during this season.

Bottom line, however you want to look at the Washington Redskins, it’s now through the prism of no drama, no obstacles. Just go out and win.

During Kirk Cousins press conference, and reflections on the team’s loss at Atlanta, the quarterback offered a comparison of another team, the San Antonio Spurs. Indeed, you’d have a hard time tracing the slightest hint of scandal or drama to a team routinely described as boring. They go out and win, and win a lot. Frankly, if you are going to aspire to such a team concept, you’d be hard pressed to do better.

Making this even more odd, as the current banner of excellence is carried year in and year out by the New England Patriots. Consistent winners, and Super Bowl contenders. A team with some frequency for being in the headlines for scandal, most recently, ‘Deflategate.’ You can certainly toss in Tom and Gisele, or anything to do with Rob Gronkowski. At least they’re colorful.

But colorful and drama won’t be words that are used to describe the Washington Redskins in 2016. At least for the time being.

Gone is the RGIII, Daniel Snyder, and Mike Shanahan triad of foolishness. Also gone are the empty uniforms of bad free agent signings. No drama upstairs or downstairs in the organization, and everyone seems to get along.

Frankly, things are downright optimistic for the Redskins in a division they can win, or at least is completely up for grabs. Under Scot McCloughan, and a leashed owner, order has been restored to a franchise sorely lacking discipline and tangible hope for winning a championship.

For Kirk Cousins’ part, I have no doubt he’ll continue to preach the upside of boring. If they are winning football games, fans will point to the lack of distraction and drama as why the team is doing well.

Now it’s just the winning part. Which if boring breeds, this team should be very good at.
