Kings pick up Regehr from Sabres to bolster defense
The Los Angeles Kings added a veteran defenseman on Monday night, acquiring Robyn Regehr from the Buffalo Sabres for second-round picks in 2014 and 2015.
Regehr, 32, agreed to waive a no-movement clause to make the exchange happen. The deal will be finalized when Regehr, a restricted free agent after this season, passes a physical.
"Los Angeles had expressed interest a couple of weeks ago," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. "(The deal) developed over that time period. I had some discussions with (Regehr) and his agent individually. It was a decision we made together. He was fine with being moved to Los Angeles."
The Kings were looking for blue-line help with Matt Greene out with an injury. Regehr has plenty of experience with 931 career games, including 29 with the Sabres this year.
Regehr was averaging 18 minutes per game and had two assists for Buffalo in the strike-shortened season. His career numbers include 170 points and 879 penalty minutes during the regular season. He also has played in 41 playoff games.
"We will withhold comment on the trade until after the medical exam is completed," KIngs general manager Dean Lombardi said, according to NHL.com.
Regier made the deal with an eye toward building a championship team in Buffalo.
"This gives him an opportunity to challenge for a Stanley Cup," Regier said. "For us, it was an opportunity to get draft picks and make our club stronger."
