Impressive days for Zach Mettenberger, Odell Beckham
LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger put on a show with a strong-armed throwing display during his Pro Day workout just 13 weeks removed from undergoing to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligamen in his left knee..
Mettenberger is regarded as a potential second-round draft target with some NFL analysts beginning to point toward him sneaking into the bottom of the first round.
Mettenberger has a huge arm, the biggest in the draft, and is also extremely accurate and well-coached under the tutelage of LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, a former Miami Dolphins head coach who's been an offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens and a head coach at Indiana.
Mettenberger a la Johnny Manziel threw in a helmet and shoulder pads and displayed an ability to plant and move around in the pocket.Mettenberger threw 125 passes, firing a large amount of intermediate throws in an unscripted workout, where he completed over 90 percent of his throws. He's expected to be 100 percent before the season begins.
"Zach threw the ball really, really well," one source who attended the workout said. "He's got the best arm in the draft. He threw a variety of passes. It was impressive."
Mettenberger had a dinner meeting ednesday night with the Minnesota Vikings and visits the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday and the Detroit Lions on Saturday.
Last season, Mettenberger passed for 3,082 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Odell Beckham wowed teams with this athleticism.
"He dominated," one source said.
Beckham stood on his NFL scouting combine numbers of a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash and a 38.5-inch vertical leap. Beckham is projected to go in the first round. He has visits with the New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills and had dinner meetings over the past few days with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert attended the workout along with Saints coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese, Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly and Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.
Meanwhile, LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry ran a 4.58, better than the pedestrian 4.77 he clocked at the NFL scouting combine. However, one source said the usally reliable Landry dropped three to four passes and was unimpressive overall.
Defensive tackle Ego Ferguson ran a 5.08 in the 40-yard dash.
LSU wide receiver Kaydron Boone ran a 4.44.
And 5-foot-11, 270-pound fullback J.C. Copeland met with roughly six teams over the past few days. Copeland ran a 4.94 in the 40-yard dash.
Every NFL team attended the Pro Day.
