Free agent list; 169 UFAs remain unsigned

It's essentially only a procedural move usually not exercised, and that was the case again this year for 172 unsigned unrestricted free agents as of June 1.

The free-agency signing period for unrestricted free agents technically lasts until July 22, and teams are able to tender their unsigned UFAs on June 1 if they want to have exclusive signing rights to those players after July 22.

Teams rarely exercise those tenders and that was the case again this year as none of the 172 players received the qualifying offer. That total includes several players that have previously announced their retirement. It also includes running back Justin Forsett (Seahawks) and cornerback Alan Ball (Cowboys), who have signed with the Houston Texans, and safety Abram Elam (Cowboys), signed by the Kansas City Chiefs, all after June 1.

There were 427 players that began the league year in March as unrestricted free agents. The 172 unsigned players do not include players released.

Of some importance is that non-tendered UFAs who sign with new teams after June 1 do not count as players lost when compensatory draft picks are allocated next March.
