In the frantic final moments of the Philadelphia Flyers’ 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night, Wayne Simmonds epitomized the hustle and effort that’s driven them to 10 straight wins, their longest streak since 1985.

Simmonds was without a stick, crouching his body down, skating laps around the offensive zone trying to prevent point shots. With a minuscule window to do so, he sprinted to the Flyers’ bench near the blue line, snagged a stick, and then sprinted back into position to break up a golden Nathan MacKinnon chance.

By the time the final seconds ticked down, Simmonds was done, barely skating, leaving it all on the ice. As they all have in this ridiculous streak.

Simmonds scored his 16th goal of the season earlier in the game, and has had a point-per-game streak in the streak. Jakub Voracek, with an assist, has 16 points in the streak. Steve Mason, holding strong at the end, made his 14th start in 16 games.

“We want to keep it alive. We know in Philly they’re enjoying it as much as we are right now,” Claude Giroux told the Daily News. “It’s not going to be easy to keep the streak alive. Every game is a big game, but right now we’re doing a good job of staying focused on how we need to play.”

The win gives the Flyers their longest winning streak since 1985, when Philly ended up winning 13 straight games from Oct. 19 through Nov. 17. For context, among the teams they defeated: The Minnesota North Stars, Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques.

The good news for the Flyers is that the streak has elevated them to 41 points, tied with the New York Rangers and two in back of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ lead. The bad news for the Flyers is that this streak happens while the top five teams in the Metro – the Penguins, Rangers, Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals – are now 22-2-0 in the last 10 days. The Flyers are just the hottest of a torrid bunch.
