Evan Boehm: the next Cardinals Center?

The Arizona Cardinals selected University of Missouri center Evan Boehm as their fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Boehm started playing football when he was in the seventh grade, and played for his father at Lee’s Summit West high school in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He earned a verbal scholarship for University of Missouri in eight grade and was a varsity starter as a high school freshman. He was ranked the number two guard in the country out of high school players.

As a freshman at University of Missouri, he started all 12 games and played well enough to merit First Team Freshman All-American status from College Football News. He was also the only Tiger offensive lineman healthy enough to start all 12 games.

During his sophomore year, he made his first start at the center position on August 31, 2013, after moving to that position during spring drills. He helped open gaps for the Tiger running attack which ranked second in the Southeastern Conference and 16th in the NCAA. He did not miss a game the whole season.

During his junior year in 2014, Boehm led the offensive line that helped the Tigers rack up a season high 587 yards, including 335 on the ground on November 15, 2014 against the Texas A & M Aggies. He started his 40th consecutive collegiate game on January 1, 2015 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against Minnesota.

He was the senior captain in 2015 and played the complete season without missing a game despite being bothered by a high ankle sprain for most of the year. He finished his college career with playing in 52 consecutive games for the University of Missouri, a new school record.

He will compete against A. Q. Shipley for the starting center position during training camp. He could potentially get the position ahead of the veteran. His work ethic is exceptional. When it came to the Cardinals new grading system that they used during the draft, Boehm was one of only about five or six players that scored top marks. He will be a great addition to the offensive line that has veterans like Evan Mathis and Mike Iupati. The rookie knows that he can rely on the veterans to help him out. We will see in the next couple of months if Boehm is able to grab that starting job. Good luck to him.
