The Packers have some tough decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks of the 2016 preseason by trimming the 90-man roster down to 53.

The Packers have many receivers to choose from in setting that final roster before the season starts and may have to make a decision on whether or not to keep Davante Adams.

With the injury to Jordy Nelson in the 2015 season, the hopes were high that Adams would fill that void a torn ACL left in the receiving corps of the Green Bay Packers. Both head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers had high hopes for Adams, Rodgers had even had said the wideout would be would be a star after an impressive camp in 2015.

The 2015 season didn’t see Adams’ star rise and he hauled in a meager 50 catches for 483 yards and a single touchdown.

That sub-par production for someone who had earned the praise of his starting quarterback can be traced back to injuries. Adams’ battled through an ankle injury through the first half of the season and he suffered a knee injury in the wildcard matchup in Washington.

The best thing for Adams moving forward is to play with confidence. With this being his third year in the league, it’s time to put up numbers or start walking. Adams is motivated and ready to be that star that his quarterback thought he could be.

“Obviously, the season I had last year, I wasn’t proud of it. So I’ve got to change it and do what I’ve got to do to move forward,” Adams said. “It’s a new year. Obviously, not everything goes the way you plan it to go. You can’t control some things. I hurt my ankle, I hurt my knee; I can’t do anything about that. What I can do is bounce back from it. It’s not just [about] proving it to the team but proving it to myself.”

Adams will have to regain Rodgers’ and McCarthy’s trust sooner rather than later. The Packers are deep this preseason with wide receivers with Nelson and Ty Montgomery returning from injury, Jeff Janis showed promise of developing this year, Randall Cobb is a franchise player and the team drafted Trevor Davis. With tight ends Richard Rodgers and Jared Cook looking to make the passing game more dynamic, where is the room for Adams?

Although Adams can say all the right things by saying he’s ready and focused, if the wow factor isn’t there in the preseason games he won’t make the 53-man roster. There is simply too many players to throw the ball to, and I feel that the Packers feel more comfortable with Montgomery moving forward because he’s a bigger deep ball threat.

If that is the case with Adams and Montgomery, I don’t see the Packers cutting Adams completely loose. With all the injuries last season in the receiving corps, keeping Adams on retainer and on the practice squad would make the most sense.
