Cubs players battle head-to-head on dueling late night shows

For the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, this is that glorious, golden honeymoon time where all they need to do is enjoy being the undisputed winners. There was a champagne shower, a parade, and now they’re taking to TV.

After David Ross, Anthony Rizzo, and Dexter Fowler stopped by “Saturday Night Live” on Saturday (with Bill Murray in tow, of course), Rizzo, Fowler, and Ben Zobrist went on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to talk about (what else?) their crazy, crazy week. But they had some competition! Their teammate Kris Bryant was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” the exact same night, and the show airs at the exact same time!

So we’ve got dueling late night appearances. How did things go?

Let’s start with backstage. The trio of Rizzo, Fowler, and Zobrist all brought their significant others with them, and we got this great pic of all of them backstage.

Okay, that’s a group of very happy (and very attractive) people, with Jimmy Fallon looking like a dorkus in the middle. Considering Fallon’s job, I feel like that’s a typical day at his show.

Over at Kimmel, this slick shot of Bryant was posted.

Classic smile and a sweet camera point! So everyone seems to be having a great time (or at least looking really great) backstage. But how did everyone do when they were on stage?

They look happy and relaxed, but I’m starting to wonder if Ben Zobrist carries that trophy with him everywhere he goes. (If he doesn’t, he really should start.)

Ooh, Bryant’s got on a really nice suit. The guy really knows how to dress up.

Let’s check out some clips. So, what happened when Fallon broached the topic of Steve Bartman?

You can see the looks on the faces of Rizzo, Fowler, and Zobrist when Fallon suggests that Bartman should throw out the first pitch on opening day. And those looks are uncomfortable. But the guys turn it into something great. Rizzo says that it would be amazing if Bartman did that, because he’s such a big part of Cubs history (whether poor Steve wants to be or not). And then Fowler says “It would only be right if Moises Alou was there to catch the ball.” Zing!

Over on Kimmel, Bryant talked about his upcoming wedding.

It’s a Cubs wedding! Anthony Rizzo is actually going to be in the wedding party, and all Bryant wants is for Travis Wood to come and keep his shirt on. But Bryant is also experiencing what Cleveland Indians pitcher Ryan Merritt did during the playoffs: fans have found his wedding registry and are buying him things.

I think this is too close to call, folks. Everyone did really great. All the Cubs are straight up slaying on TV right now. Bryant and David Ross are appearing on “Ellen” on Tuesday, and I bet the trend will continue.
