College football roundup: Arkansas State names Harsin head coach
Texas co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin has been named Arkansas State's new head football coach, the school announced Wednesday.
Harsin says he will begin work immediately at Arkansas State and will not coach the Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon State.
Major Applewhite and Darrell Wyatt now will be co-offensive coordinators at Texas, and Applewhite will assume the play-calling duties for the bowl game.
Harsin replaces Gus Malzahn, who left Arkansas State after one season to coach at Auburn. Malzahn was 9-3 this season with the Red Wolves. Arkansas State will play Kent State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6. Defensive coordinator John Thompson will serve as Arkansas State's interim head coach for that game.
--Arkansas junior running back Knile Davis will pass up his final year of eligibility to enter the 2013 NFL draft.
Davis will be represented by Mike Conley Sr., CollegeFootballNews.com reported Wednesday.
After rushing for 1,322 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2010, Davis missed the following season after suffering an ankle injury in August 2011. This past season, Davis struggled under a new coaching staff. He rushed for 377 yards on 112 carries and two touchdowns.
---Clemson will be missing a big-play threat in its Chick-fil-A Bowl matchup with LSU on Dec. 31.
Coach Dabo Swinney suspended wide receiver Martavis Bryant after he failed to satisfy academic requirements, the school announced Tuesday night.
Bryant, a sophomore backup, has 10 receptions this season but averages 30.5 yards per catch.
---Notre Dame will face Michigan under the lights on Sept. 7, 2013, in Ann Arbor, Mich., in a nationally-televised primetime game, the University of Michigan announced.
"Our athletic department is looking forward to recreating the night game magic from two years ago," said UM athletic director Dave Brandon. "We have more in store for this game than the initial night game and will work hard to create many WOW moments."
---Former Missouri offensive coordinator David Yost has been offered the job as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator, the Columbia Daily Tribune reported.
