Colangelo: Williams out of shape during Olympics

USA Basketball president Jerry Colangelo told the New York Daily News on Saturday that Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams is injured because he out of shape last summer for the Olympics.

"Deron Williams, for the Olympics, was not in the best shape," Colangelo said. "He was a little overweight, and I told him that at the time."

Williams has missed the past two games will miss Sunday's All-Star game with inflammation in both ankles. He said the swelling started when he was in London for the Games and did not allow enough time to rest before the season.

Williams received platelet-rich plasma injections this week and is expected to return to practice on Monday. He has also dealt with thigh, wrist and shoulder injuries, but has only missed three games.

Colangelo said Olympic teammates, including LeBron James and Kevin Durant, are playing well and are healthy because they have stayed in shape.

"If you look at the track record of all the players who participated with us, how they came into their seasons and had outstanding years," Colangelo said. "So there are injures that have taken place that have nothing to do with participating with us. If anything, they're in better shape and they're better prepared going into training camp with their teams."

Williams' numbers are down this season. He is averaging 16.7 points, 7.6 assists and he is shooting just 41 percent.
