Clayton Kershaw really didn't like his first news conference question

Clayton Kershaw pitched a heckuva game on Sunday night. In Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs, Kershaw threw seven innings of two-hit, no-run baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he had six strikeouts on top of that. He even made it through the seventh inning, which was a huge accomplishment given his postseason struggles (and his 28.93 postseason ERA) in that inning. Considering what a difficult time he’s had in the playoffs, it wasn’t just a classic Kershaw performance: it was redemption.

So at the postgame news conference, what do you think Kershaw’s first question was about? Do you think it was about his outstanding performance? Or his determination to make it through the seventh inning? Or the team’s win, which evened up the series with Cubs?

Nope. It was about the seventh inning fly ball that Cubs second baseman Javy Baez almost hit out of the park. The reporter wanted to know if Kershaw thought that Baez’s ball was a home run off the bat. Kershaw’s response was, like his pitching performance, an instant classic.

“That’s your first freaking question?”

After being righteously incredulous that his first postgame news conference question was about a near-mistake instead of all the other awesomeness surrounding it, Kershaw did answer the question.

“Yeah, I did, I thought it was out for sure.”

That’s Clayton Kershaw for you. He’s a master pitcher, he’s honest, and he’s not afraid to own reporters who open news conferences with less-than-wise questions.
