The move by the team does not come as a surprise seeing that Mettenberger was formerly a part of the Tennessee Titans, a team that was coached by a man familiar to the Bolts organization, Ken Wisenhunt. The former and new offensive coordinator of the Chargers, Wisenhunt, agreed to terms with the Titans to become their head coach but unfortunately had little success with the team as they went 2-14 on the season.

As the San Diego Chargers do not have a solid backup for Philip Rivers at number 3, they decided to pull the trigger and signing the 24 year old quarterback. Mettenberger hasn’t had that much success in the pro level, losing all of the games he started as quarterback of the Titans. In order for the Bolts to claim Mettenberger, they had to make room on the roster. That meant releasing newly acquired signal caller Bryn Renner.

With Philip Rivers not getting any younger, the Bolts need to find a quarterback that can sit behind him and learn. Mettenberger is the type of person that fits the profile that San Diego Chargers are looking for in a quarterback. Rivers is not a very mobile person and likes to stay in the pocket and that is something that Mettenberger can learn from him.

We look forward to seeing how this young man develops in Bolts offense, and have our fingers crossed we found our qb of the future.
