CFL's Alouettes fire Dan Hawkins

Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp will assume head-coaching duties after Dan Hawkins was fired five games into the CFL season.

Hawkins was hired to replace Marc Trestman, who became head coach of the Chicago Bears in January.

The Alouettes are 2-3, including a 38-27 loss to Calgary in a game Montreal led by 24 points.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who excelled in Trestman's quick-timing passing offense, has floundered. At age 41, he wasn't a fit in the vertical passing attack Hawkins installed.

Hawkins, 52, previously coached in the college football ranks at Boise State and Colorado.
