Cancer forcing Karl to take leave

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl is again battling cancer and will take a leave of absence from the team, a source said Tuesday.

The cancer isn't considered life-threatening. Karl will make the announcement at a news conference Tuesday evening in Denver.

Karl underwent surgery for prostate cancer in the summer of 2005. A source close to Karl said he now has another form of cancer.

Karl's return to the Nuggets depends on how he responds to treatment. While the situation is serious, doctors are confident Karl will overcome the cancer. He received his first treatment Tuesday.

Karl agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million extension for next season. The source said the health issue contributed to Karl agreeing to only a one-year extension.

Nuggets assistant coach Adrian Dantley has replaced Karl during his previous absences.
