By now I’m sure you have heard about the United States presidential election. If you haven’t spoilers ahead! Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton and will become the nations 45th President. That’s quite an accomplishment, one that would have likely never happened had the billionaire been allowed to purchase the Buffalo Bills back in 2014.

When the team was up for sale, one of the many interested parties was one Donald Trump. Willing to spend around $1 billion to purchase the team when it first went up for sale, Trump was pipped to the pole by the Pegula family. Before Trump could put another offer in, the deal was accepted and approved by the NFL midway through the 2014 season.

Just under a year later, Trump announced his candidacy for president. While there is no guarantee that Trump would have not run for president had he managed to acquire the team, there is evidence suggesting that he would have not have run given the responsibility that comes with owning an NFL team.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated just after announcing his candidacy, Trump basically stated that his run for president would not have occurred if he owned the Bills.

“I’m glad I didn’t get the team, because if I bought the Buffalo Bills, I probably would not be running for president”, Trump said.

This was not the end of Trump’s speculation. Speaking later to CBS, Trump was even more direct with his run for president likely having not occurred with NFL ownership on his plate.

“If I bought that team, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing,” Trump said.

For those of us out there that have strong opinions on the recent election, here are some people for you to praise or blame. For those angry with the election of Trump, make sure to go after Roger Goodell. Had he possibly given Trump more time to get an improved offer in, this election would have gone a completely different election.

Those that supported the soon-to-be-president, make sure you send your thank you cards to the Wilson family. Members of the trust that inherited the team following the death of Ralph Wilson took the Pegula families offer and chose not to look elsewhere. The quickness of the sale denied Trump his chance at the team which eventually led to his presidency.
