Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Out of Shogun Rua UFC 161 Rematch Due to Injury

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Returns to Training, Targets May or June UFC Fight

The UFC 161 fight card has taken another major blow. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is out of his rematch with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua due to a back problem.

Brazilian website Combate.com first reported the injury, which was later confirmed by UFC officials.

This is the second major blow to the UFC 161 fight card, which is the promotion’s first event in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The original main event pitting interim bantamweight champion Renan Barão against Eddie Wineland was scrapped when Barão had to withdraw due to injury. That forced the UFC to elevate the original co-main event bout between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans into the headlining position, and Shogun vs. Nogueira became the new co-main event.

With Nogueira out, the UFC is now tasked with trying to find a replacement to face Shogun on just two weeks’ notice.

UFC 161 is slated for June 15 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.
