Blues 4, Red Wings 3 (OT)
DETROIT -- Alexander Steen's overtime goal gave the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena.
Chris Stewart had a goal and an assist and Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for St. Louis (7-5-1), which had been winless in the previous five games. Jake Allen stopped 15 shots in his first NHL start. He was in net because veteran Brian Elliott has struggled recently.
Tomas Tatar, Drew Miller and Pavel Datsyuk got the goals for Detroit (7-4-2). Jimmy Howard made 21 saves.
Steen jammed a shot past Howard from just outside the crease for Steen's third goal.
Justin Abdelkader's shot with 1:43 left in the third was the Red Wings' only shot of the period. The Blues had just six shots in the period.
Datsyuk's sixth goal of the season tied the game at 3, with 7:21 remaining in the second period. He banked a shot in off the back of Allen's leg from behind the net.
Tarasenko and Stewart scored their sixth goals of the season 1:45 apart in the second gave the Blues a 3-2 lead.
Tarasenko scored on the power play 7:12 into the middle period on a shot from the inside part of the right circle. Stewart than took a pass from Alex Pietrangelo for a breakaway and beat Howard with a couple of moves and a backhand shot.
Detroit led 2-1 after the first period. Berglund put St. Louis on the board with a shorthanded goal with 4:42 left. He put in a one-timer from the right circle off a pass that T.J. Oshie made while falling in the high slot. It was Berglund's sixth goal.
Tatar and Miller had given the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.
Tatar opened the scoring just 2:17 into the game when he stole the puck from Pietrangelo right in front of Allen. Tatar made a couple of moves and put a backhand shot under the crossbar for his first goal.
Miller got his first goal, at 7:54, when he poked in his own rebound as it lay along the goal line.
NOTES: Detroit forward Johan Franzen didn't play because of a sore hip flexor. He was replaced in the lineup by Patrick Eaves, and Justin Abdelkader took his place on a line with Henrik Zetterberg and Damien Brunner. ... Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi missed his third game with a sore back. ... Defenseman Wade Redden and forward Matt D'Agostini were healthy scratches for St. Louis. ... Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak missed his fifth game due to a groin injury. ... Former Red Wings star defenseman and seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom, who retired after last season, was in attendance along with former teammate Tomas Holmstrom, who also has retired. Lidstrom returned to his native Vasteras, Sweden, to live.
