Billy Hamilton somehow scores from second on passed ball

It’s no secret Cincinnati Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton is blazing fast. He’s proven that so many times over his career that we should no longer be surprised when he turns a routine play into an amazing event.

That said, sometimes we can’t help it. Hamilton once again showed off his incredible speed during Tuesday’s 9-5 win against the Chicago Cubs. This time, Hamilton managed to score on a passed ball … from second base.

After a first inning walk against John Lackey, Hamilton reached second after Joey Votto also drew a base on balls. With Jay Bruce at the plate, Lackey threw a first pitch curveball. Catcher David Ross lowered his glove to make the catch, but the ball broke slightly under Ross’ mitt.

The instant it became clear Ross missed the pitch, Hamilton started running furiously toward third. At that point, Hamilton noticed a few things.

Ross ran back to retrieve the ball slowly, expecting both runners to only advance one base. On top of that, Lackey appeared frustrated with himself, and remained on the mound.

Realizing Lackey would never have enough time to cover the plate, and that he could beat Ross in a footrace, Hamilton sprinted home from third. At no point did Hamilton hesitate to make the move. He had already assessed the situation while running to third, and decided to also take home.

The gamble paid off. Ross and Lackey both realize what’s going on, but it’s too late. Lackey breaks for home, but can’t get there in time. Ross attempts to throw the ball in a panic, but it sails over Lackey’s head. Even with a perfect throw, Lackey had no chance of tagging Hamilton out.

The run gave the Reds an early lead, one they would never relinquish during the contest.

It’s just another reminder that any time Hamilton is on base, pitchers cannot forget about him. If they do, his speed can change the game in an instant.
